to be the best of the best operations according to both shell and the obama administration, and it turned out to be no match for the arctic. one of my colleagues put it quite well earlier today when he was talking about this can't be another paper exercise. they have to really dig into what happened here, and the secretary salazar said he didn't want to pre-suppose any inclusionsconclusions but it's hard to cool to any conclusion but that shell screwed up, and the arctic is no match for the technology they'll put up there. >> cenk: the arctic sounds like to "the young turks" too strong. i'm skeptical about the administration because i've seen when they've reallowed drilling in the gulf coast. well, the safety precautions you know, it's a work in progress. that makes me really concerned. is my concern about the obama administration in this realm justified or not justified. >> totally justified. shell has a lot of egg on their face right now. but the fact of the matter is the obama administration pretty much okayed this operation. you look at what shell is trying to do. the whole process is a d

times progressives giving that withdrawal statement during the obama administration. i would be a distraction, et cetera. for a conservative to do it. wow! who are these legendary progressives who can get president obama to listen to them. as you can see from the presidential inaugural committee, they have listened in deed. if there's one progressive group that gets the job done, it is gay rights activists. god bless their heart. matt joins us in studio. there's a lot to discuss. how in the world does the gay rights community get so many successes politically? >> i think in this instance in particular, you saw the obama administration's desire not to have rick warren part two. that plagued him for weeks. weeks and weeks. and knowing how well the lbgt movement worked for the obama reelection campaign, there's no way they were interested in messing this up. there's a bottom line. lgbt helped get obama reelected and he knows that. >> cenk: i think you've hit on it exactly. that so how did they get him reelected? the lgbt community is strong, but not a high percentage of the vote

estimation. so i think this is as much about precluding where they see the obama administration going as it is about this nomination. >> john: and that he wants to change the pentagon on an constitutional level. joe, your thoughts? >> well, my thoughts, yes that's exactly right. he's going to change the pentagon as an institution because as a former senator he knows the ins and outs of how the budget process works knows how to get the numbers down. he and obama are kindred spirits. and they both kind of have the same world-view. they both are willing to be contrary to their own party loyalties. they're both willing to do the tough decisions to make decisions that won't necessarily be popular with their own people and get it done for the good of the country. so i think hagel brings credibility to that position, not only as somebody who has been a long-time public servant but someone who understands military culture and who has actually been there. that credibility is going to go a long way. i think from the white house perspective this could be a bit of muscle flexing for the second-te

complex. >> apparently. i have been completely befuddled by the obama administration's approach to this. i've always really wanted to know what are the politics that we're not seeing that led them to go after all of the dispensaries in california. >> john: let's assume it was re-election. >> i don't believe it was. >> john: now that he's got the gig, he suggested he would revisit american drug policy in his second term. do you think there is any chance a sane approach will be taken? >> no. because there are so many other things that will be on his agenda. he's not getting to this. but that does not explain why -- he made the statement at the beginning, this was not a big deal to him. he was going to leave it alone. i was in california. you were in california. they went right after this. i want to know why. there is an answer to this. we've never found out what it is. >> john: if you believe in state's rights but still support the drug war you must be high. i need to have some positive news here. i want to bring up a good story i heard this week. a court decided today that lgbt troops disch

money year after year after year. >> cenk: that's all under the obama administration. the evil corporate obama administration, and their profits went up each year. >> blame the insurance company. if you want to blame somebody, blame the insurance companies. they are the ones who are jacking up your rates. >> cenk: they're doing it before the heart of affordable care act has started yet. >> they're using it as an excuse. don't buy the propaganda. >> cenk: great work. thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. now when we come back, we've told you about climate change.. mississippi is at record low amounts, and then fires droughts disasters. we'll talk about it when we come back. >> flames devouring homes. smoke kangaroo hopping through a charred moonscape. carl. >> well man, this is the last you'll see. >> the pictures coming out of australia are apocalyptic. flames devouring homes. blossoms of smoke. a lone kangaroo hopping through a charred moonscape. it's so hot that the government had to change it's forecast map adding new shades of purple for temperatures possibly hitting 130 degree

in washington continues to turn. and cabinet secretary has resigned out of the obama administration. who was it? well tell you in just a few moments. first, we'll go to out to los angeles, our current news update with lisa ferguson. >> hey peter. good morning bill. good morning everyone. more gun debate as vice president joe biden takes on a new round of meetings along with attorney general eric holder. first they'll speak with wildlife and sporting groups at 11:45 this morning. on to gun owner's groups including the nra and representatives from the entertainment industry this evening. kathleen sebelius wills attend some of the meetings. it is a big step for president obama's new gun violence task force launched in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook elementary. but it did not necessarily leave many with high expectations. businesses that sell a lot of guns like walmart will also be in on some meetings. those groups are more likely to be influenced by the nra since they're making a big profit off those firearms. and they do not want to appear too entrenched in the white house's anti-gun push

't there more prominent women being looked at in these positions? that may not be the obama administration's fault. it may be a fault of why aren't these women being promoted more to begin with why is sus afternoon rice pretty much the only person being mentioned for secretary of state? there should be more women since women make up more than half the population. it's getting better that they are at least mentioned for many. for many years obviously there were no women in the cabinet. but it's not good enough. i think the obama administration is saying we are noticing you are not putting women in, i think is important. >> amanda, why didn't we see the same kind of reaction particularly from the right, you know, when bush was approximatelypresident? i found it kind of striking yesterday on "meet the press"that, you know, mike murphy and hailee barber were making shots. >> on diversity. >> exactly. it's just -- it kind of begs the question of credibility from the attackers. >> uh-huh. >> do you think it's a fair point? >> well, i think that -- i mean this may say a
